Minecraft vs. The Last of Us: Narrative or Declarative Design? - TGB Podcast S2 E9
The Game Beyond

Are You Telling a Story, or Are You a Facilitator?

The Revelation: Game meaning doesn't only come from dialogue (Narrative). It also emerges from mechanics (Declarative).

  • Narrative Design (Linear/Scripted): Think The Last of Us. The story is written for the player.

  • Declarative Design (Emergent/Systemic): Think Minecraft or RimWorld. The ruleset is provided, and the story emerges from player actions within those rules.

  • The Goal: We strive for Ludonarrative Harmony, where the actions the player must perform (killing monsters) perfectly match the values the story claims (the player is a hero).

  • Takeaway: Systems can communicate meaning without words. The mechanic of sharing resources in a co-op game teaches connection better than a cutscene.
